A flat plain of fields and trees, a railway line running straight across it to the foot of a steep forested ridge.

The shape of the place

Flat all the way from Delhi. Steep from the first bend.

A guest room with a teal runner across the bed, a blue marble floor and a lit cove in the ceiling.
The brass room-key fob, stamped THE MOUNT VALLEY KATHGODAM.

Welcome

A family hotel on the last flat ground

Kathgodam is where the railway stops and the hills begin. This is the last flat ground before either — a house run by the family who own it, Rohit Gupta and his brother, with a kitchen they cook themselves, a lift, and a desk still staffed when the last train comes in. There is no booking engine and there never has been. You telephone, and the owner answers.

In the morning

The road up starts where the rails stop

The morning after is the climb: out of the plain, into chir pine, and up a road of hairpin bends.

Two rails ending at old iron buffer stops, a forested hill rising straight behind them.
01The rails stop
Low morning sun through tall chir pines on a steep slope.
02Then pine
An empty road of tight hairpin bends climbing a forested hillside above a hazy valley.

The house

The things that do not change

The lift on a guest floor, its indicator showing the third.
The covered parking floor, with a chequerboard tile floor.
A guest-floor corridor, looking towards the window at its end.
  1. A lift

Uncommon at this size and this rate, and the first thing anyone carrying a suitcase notices.

  2. Free private parking

On site, off the road, and included. If you are driving up tomorrow the car sleeps here tonight.

  3. Power backup, and free Wi‑Fi

The supply here is not always steady; the backup is why that is our problem rather than yours. The Wi‑Fi costs nothing.

To book

Telephone the hotel

Booking direct spares the hotel the fifteen to twenty per cent the travel sites take, so ask for the direct rate; it can be negotiated. There is no booking engine on this site, and that is deliberate.
